They are omnivores, eating insects, minnows, frogs, eggs, berries, seeds, grain, and even small birds and mice.
They nest in colonies.
Can be considered a pest by farmers because of their large numbers and fondness for grain and seeds. They cause serious damage to corn, sunflower, and other crops.
They act as seed dispersers. They also help control populations of insects and other prey items they consume in the diet and in turn they provide food for local predators.
Practice “anting” behavior; they rub insects on their feathers to apply liquids such as formic acid secreted by the insects in order to get rid of parasites.
They can mimic the sounds of other birds or even humans, though not as precisely as the mockingbird.
