Ground dwelling digger.
Unlike many social wasps and bees, they rarely attempt to sting unless handled roughly.
Males cannot sting at all. They are generally not aggressive toward humans and usually fly away when swatted at.
The females hunt cicadas, sting and paralyze them, and then bring them back to their burrow to feed their young. It is a difficult flight, because the cicada is more than twice her weight.
Adults feed on flower nectar and other plant sap.
They provide some natural control on the cicada populations, which can benefit the trees upon which cicadas feed.
